Magnetic Resonance Imaging Testing
A Magnetic Resonance Imaging test has been ordered by your physician. An MRI uses a special magnet to form images on film. There is no radiation involved for this type of scan. |
To prepare for the test you should wear comfortable clothing, if at all possible clothing without zippers, snaps, or metal is the best choice, (sweat pants outfits) otherwise you may be asked to change into a gown. |
When you arrive at the medical center go to the Outpatient Registration desk (located on the ground floor), to register for your test. You should arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled exam time. After being registered, an MRI technologist will take you to the MRI unit. This room is equipped with a table and a large magnet which is circular in shape (similar to a cat scanning device). You will be asked to lie on the table in a certain position, depending on what part of the body is being scanned, in most cases you will be lying on your back. Throughout the test you will hear a loud tapping sound, which is a normal part of the procedure. The technologist will talk with you during the exam and they will also give you a small rubber ball to squeeze during your test, this rubber ball sounds an alarm for the technologist in the event that you need assistance. Please keep in mind that it is very important that you hold very still during your test, each exam will take 30-45 minutes per body part. You may have to have an iv fluid for certain types of exams depending on your medical history. Please keep in mind that you may be allowed to have an MRI scan 6-8 weeks after most surgeries or stent placements. Please inform the technologist of your history, if you have any types of implants, gunshot wounds, or shrapnel in your body currently or in the past. You may be asked your current weight, there is a 350 pound weight limit. In the event that you are apprehensive about your test, please inform your physician, medications can be ordered and given to relieve your anxieties. After your test is complete, a radiologist will read your films and send your physician a report. |
