CAMBRIDGE, Ohio, Nov. 3, 2010 – November is American Diabetes Month, and to celebrate, the diabetes educators at Southeastern Med will present Celebrate Diabetes and the Holidays on Monday, Nov. 15 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., in Southeastern Med’s Morrison, Amos and Deddish rooms.

The evening will begin with a Diabetes Fair from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, featuring vendors from diabetes supply companies and area programs and services of interest to people with diabetes. The fair is free and open to the public.
After the fair, join Southeastern Med’s Outpatient Dietitian and Diabetes Educator, Sharon Graff-Harrison, MS, RD, LD, CDE, at Celebrate Diabetes and the Holidays Too to learn how to prepare healthy versions of traditional holiday recipes and sample new recipes.

“Think healthy lifestyle, not restrictions to build a healthier body,” said Graff-Harrison. “Those with diabetes can eat, drink and be merry in appropriate portions and moderate amounts. Although you may have diabetes, everyday can still be a holiday celebration.”

Registration is required for the Celebrate Diabetes and the Holidays Too portion of the evening and participation is limited. For more information or to register, call the Wellness Resources Department at Southeastern Med at 740-435-2946.

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio, Oct. 25, 2010 – On Nov. 10, Southeastern Med’s Wellness Resources Department will offer bone density screenings for women at Community HealthLink, 1205 Clark St., in Cambridge, from 8-10 a.m.
The screening, which is a safe, painless and accurate procedure, detects decreases in bone mass. A decrease in bone density is an indicator of Osteoporosis, a bone weakening disease affecting 1 in 4 women. If detected early, it can be treated.

Participants should wear shoes and socks that can be easily removed. The screening will require participants to place one of their feet upon the machine that will be used for the procedure, which normally requires 5-10 minutes to complete. Chelsea Dierkes, Community Dietitian with Southeastern Med, will be interpreting the results for each individual.

The screening is only for women 40 and older who have not had a bone density screening within the last two years or have not been diagnosed with either osteoporosis or low bone mass. The cost of the screening is $10 per person and an appointment is required.

For more information or to make an appointment, call Lori Colby at 740-439-8187.

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio, Oct. 13, 2010 – When we first moved to Cambridge many years ago, we stumbled onto a restaurant called Coney Island, now known as Theo’s. It became more than a restaurant for us. It was a meeting place, local hot spot, etc. You could always see someone there that you knew. Whenever I was too busy to cook, the family has always been more than ready to go there to dine.

The restaurant was started the year I was born. That also makes it special to me although it took us years to enjoy it. My husband, Don, is diabetic, but we can always find something he can eat and occasionally share a piece of their famous pie. I really enjoyed designing this tile and I hope all will enjoy it as it celebrates its place in the history of Cambridge.
