Upcoming Screenings at Southeastern Med

If your physician has recommended that you schedule a screening for lung cancer or breast cancer, or if you’re in a high risk group and looking to take correct precautions, Southeastern Med is offering expanded access to these critical exams on two upcoming dates this November. All patients are asked to schedule in advance, but you do NOT need to have health insurance to book an appointment.

Next Lung Cancer Screening: Thursday, November 5, 2020 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Next Breast Cancer Screening: Tuesday, November 17, 2020 from 4pm to 6pm

What to Know Ahead of a Lung Cancer Screening:

People at the highest risk for lung cancer are aged 55-80, who are either current smokers or who have had a long history of smoking in their past. Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer affecting both men and women, but with early detection and treatment, many patients are able to improve their condition and live a better life. The November 5th screenings will take place here at 1341 Clark Street in our radiology department (ground floor). Please note that all patients are permitted one screening per 12 months (one year). Female patients can wear a sports bra to avoid the hassle of having to get into a gown. After the screening, our radiology team will assess the results and inform you on what next steps should be taken, if any.

What to Know Ahead of a Breast Cancer Screening:

According to the American Cancer Society, women aged 40 and older should have a Diagnostic Mammography, or Mammogram, once a year. Southeastern Med’s Community Healthlink provides a world class facility for these screenings right in our community, utilizing advanced digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) to create a high resolution, 3D image of the breast—without increasing the amount of radiation needed in the exam.

The mammograms on November 17 will be overseen by Dr. Michael Sarap, the Director of our medical center’s Breast Care and Colorectal Cancer Teams. On the day of the test, you can shower beforehand, but don’t apply any deodorant or lotion. During the exam, you’ll be asked to change into a gown that opens in the front. Because of an expected high volume of interest in these screenings, we do ask any interested patients to contact us at their earliest convenience at 740.432.5465 to schedule their appointment.
